Many of the maps I create are for historical fiction books. I work with a lot of authors, some are first-time authors and some, like Amy Mantravadi, have written several books. Amy wrote a historical fiction series about her ancestor who lived in 12th-century England and she wanted a map showing locations in the story.
Beach Vibe Rentals & Sales wanted a poster map of Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Encinitas to show where customers could take their rented e-bikes and golf carts, with suggested points of interest. Read how we created those different layouts.
I worked with the City of Brantford on multiple mapping projects last year - putting the finishing touches on their outdoor wayfinding maps, designing new maps of river access points, and updating their visitor guide map of Downtown Brantford. Even when cities design maps in-house, they can often use a helping hand!
Read about my collaboration with the team at Vaughan Tourism to launch a new tourist map for their city. The map highlights many businesses and attractions in Vaughan and will appear in their visitor guide and on their website.
Three B's Flowers in Stony Plain, Alberta, wanted a custom delivery zone map to display on the wall of their shop. We designed the map in collaboration with our client to fit in with their shop decor - black and white with natural wood. Read more to see early drafts and how we calculated the delivery zones.
Herbarella is a quarterly gardening, travel, and lifestyle magazine in Switzerland. I've been working with Gianni Bombèn, the publishing editor, for years now. Each map highlights a specific tourist destination and gives readers a clear picture of the destination at a glance. Read more about our long-time collaboration.
Collin Yarbrough's book, "Paved A Way", discusses infrastructure, policy, and racism, while learning about the history of the Central Expressway in Dallas. I helped Collin create a map showing the neighbourhoods affected by the expressway construction.
I worked with ClimateActionWR to create maps for proposed active transportation hubs to present to the Region and local councils. These hubs are part of a long-term strategy to encourage people to leave their cars at home for short trips within their neighbourhoods.
Greg Madonna's memoir - The Learjet Diaries - is about his time in the 1970s as a pilot flying in South America and the Caribbean. He wanted a series of black and white maps, simple and clean with a serious tone, to illustrate his story. Read more about the development of these maps.
I worked with Jacob Taylor-Mosquera this past spring on a map to accompany his memoir, "I Met Myself in October: A Memoir of Belonging". He writes about his international adoption from Columbia and his search to find his biological family. Read more about our collaboration on a map of Cali for his book.
Strong Start Charitable Organization needed maps to help them track locations of their literacy programs. They weren't able to find an existing map to suit their needs, so they contacted me to create a custom map that would help them plan expansion of their programs into more school districts. Read more about it here.
Last fall I worked with authors writing a book about an 18th-century shipwreck. They wanted a map to show the route of Vrouw Maria, a merchant ship carrying Dutch Masters paintings from Amsterdam to Catherine the Great in St. Petersburg. Unfortunately it sank off the coast of Finland and the treasures were lost for over 200 years. Continue reading more about this map and the upcoming book.
