Last winter I wrote about using maps to support local business. I talked about various free online directories, whether it's a city's BIA, a blogger's curated list, or user-created Google Maps.
After I saw a Buy Local Map of Guelph, which was made using Tableau Public, I started a project on that platform to compile businesses from various local directories on one interactive map.
It's a work in progress and I'm asking for suggestions for businesses to include. Because I'm still learning Tableau and want to keep this project a manageable size, I'm starting with locally-owned and independent businesses selling products. Eventually I'll add services, too.
Help people find you
Now that things are slowly returning to normal, make sure your business is in front of as many people as possible:
- search for online directories and ask to be listed
- see if someone in your community has interactive maps that allow people to search for you by name or view categories of businesses
- or create your own directory or map
